An Edible Mushroom Listed in the Red Book Spotted in Minsk

Minsk resident Vasilisa noticed an unusual mushroom on a tree trunk near her home. It turned out to be a very rare species, listed in the Red Book, writes Blizko.by.

A rare and unusual mushroom, Silky Rosegill (Volvariella silvicola), was captured. Young mushrooms of this species are egg-shaped, covered with a characteristic velvety or fluffy white coating. As it grows, the "shell" breaks open, revealing a large mushroom with a white cap and gills.

The mushroom is found in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and Caribbean countries. It appears in summer and autumn in deciduous and mixed forests, parks, on living and dead stumps of deciduous trees — often on linden, maple, poplar, or oak.

Despite being edible, this mushroom is listed in the Red Book of Belarus. It is strictly forbidden to collect it, as a fine is imposed for doing so.
