On July 17, it became known that Christopher Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern European Affairs, would soon leave his post. One of the sources of the "Zerkalo" publication, which reported this, claimed that the diplomat would continue his professional career in Moldova, but, probably, not within the structures of the Department of State.
According to information received from our source in the diplomatic corps, Smith will become the head of the mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in that country.
Christopher Smith is a career high-ranking employee of the US diplomatic service. He has held the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern European Affairs since July 2023. Smith speaks Russian and Turkish. In 2022-2023, he was Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Kyiv.
