Three car brands with the worst drivers: Is your car on the list?

If you've ever joked that you can recognize a specific car brand by the bad driver behind the wheel, then insurance company data is ready to confirm it. A study by the LendingTree portal analyzed statistics from 30 popular car brands and calculated the number of incidents in the USA (accidents, DUI cases, speeding tickets, and other violations) per 1,000 drivers for the period from January 1 to December 16, 2025.

Top 3 Brands by Number of Violations

The results were quite telling: the top three "anti-leaders" were BMW, Tesla, and Ram.

BMW — 44.9 incidents per 1,000 drivers (or 4.49%). Drivers of this German brand demonstrate the highest level of accidents and violations in the USA.

Ram — 44.7 incidents per 1,000 drivers (4.47%). Owners of powerful pickup trucks are practically keeping pace with the leader of the ranking.

Tesla — 42.8 incidents per 1,000 drivers (4.28%). Electric cars, which topped this list last year, have dropped to third place this year.

For comparison, in other popular brands (such as Volkswagen, Mazda, Lexus, Infiniti, Hyundai, and Toyota), this indicator is significantly lower, ranging from 20 to 30 incidents.

Accidents and Alcohol: Who Has Which Problems?

Accidents

Here, Tesla takes first place — 26 to 27 accidents per 1,000 drivers. The only other brands that also exceeded the 20 accidents per thousand mark were Ram and Subaru.

Driving Under the Influence (DUI)

The highest rate of drunk drivers was recorded for BMW (more than 3 cases per 1,000 drivers), which is almost double that of the trailing brand, Ram.

Why These Specific Brands?

Researchers put forward several hypotheses as to why these particular cars appear more frequently in reports. Fast electric vehicles with instant acceleration (Tesla), powerful engines (BMW), and heavy pickup trucks (Ram) can inherently encourage more aggressive driving.

Additionally, BMW and Ram have aggressive designs. It is possible that this also attracts drivers who are inclined to test the limits of what is allowed and take more risks on the road.
