12 EHU graduates and their teachers created "Theater 21" in Vilnius
This Friday you can go to the first play in Belarusian.
Graduates of the European Humanities University's theater program decided to stay together after graduation and create an independent theater "Theater 21". They are working with Volha Palevikava, former head of the Old Vilnius Theater, and director Aliaksandr Marchenko, writes "Volna".
Initially, it was expected that the young artists would return to Belarus and work there. According to Palevikava, the events of 2020, and then Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, destroyed these plans. Their own theater became a way to continue working in emigration.
"The need to do theater together turned out to be stronger than all the difficulties we faced. During our studies, a group of people formed who have something to say to each other and to the audience," says Palevikava.
The participants want to talk about life between countries, cultures, and languages, about fear and uncertainty, about the right to be different from others. However, they do not intend to limit themselves to the topic of emigration.
The repertoire includes productions based on works by Brecht and Gombrowicz, "Chocolate" by Joanne Harris, contemporary Belarusian dramaturgy, documentary and poetic plays. The artists combine literary texts with their own stories.
The next performance is on October 23 (Friday) at 18:30: "The Hunger Artist's Return" — a reinterpretation of Kafka's short story by Belarusian playwright Siarhei Kavaliou.
The play will be performed in Belarusian at the EHU building at Savičiaus g. 17. Duration — 1 hour 20 minutes. Tickets — from 20 euros: buy tickets.
The team has also announced the play "I'm the Heir" for October 30.
