Head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag resigned because he had a child through surrogacy

German politician Jens Spahn announced his resignation from the position of chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) faction in the Bundestag. In a letter to faction members, he stated that he had come to the conclusion that his personal life and political position could no longer be reconciled. According to him, the most important thing for him remains the family he created with his partner, reports Der Spiegel.

The reason for the resignation was a public discussion surrounding surrogacy. Spahn, who previously opposed such practices, became a father with his husband through surrogacy. This drew criticism from some representatives of the CDU/CSU, as surrogacy is prohibited in Germany, and the party had previously affirmed its opposition to it.

The politician noted that the scale of criticism and public reaction was unexpected for him. According to Spahn, the contradiction between his personal decision and the expectations of him as faction leader became greater than he had anticipated.

Previously, individual CDU representatives, including leaders of some regional party structures, had called on him to leave his post. It was reported that German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz also urged Spahn to resign.

Spahn thanked the faction members for their cooperation and stated that his family would now be his priority.
