Former BT sound engineer sentenced to penal colony after returning from Poland
Yury Trashchynski worked for state television for over twenty years. But after returning from abroad, he was detained and imprisoned for cooperating with an independent radio.
Yury Trashchynski was born on December 20, 1967. From 1986 to 1988, Trashchynski served in Moscow, specifically in the elite Kremlin Regiment. This was the closed military unit 1005, responsible for the security of the highest leadership of the USSR, performing honorary guard duty and guarding the Moscow Kremlin.
He later enrolled in the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute (now BSUIR) and graduated in 1993. For over 20 years, the man worked as a sound engineer at Belteleradiocompany.
According to information from "Radio Racyja", after the 2020 presidential elections, Yury signed a petition against violence by security forces, and later left for Poland.
Security forces detained Trashchynski on November 15, 2025, as soon as he returned to Minsk from abroad. Initially, the former sound engineer was sent to Akrestsina for 15 days on an administrative charge, but he never regained his freedom.
A criminal case was initiated against the man, and he was transferred to Minsk pre-trial detention center No. 1, and then escorted to Homiel before the trial.
Yury was tried in the Homiel Regional Court. On May 4, 2026, Judge Siarhei Salouski found him guilty of "participating in an extremist formation" for cooperating with "Radio Racyja".
As the Belarusian Association of Journalists reported, Trashchynski was sentenced to 2.5 years in a general-regime penal colony and a fine of 22,500 rubles. The verdict has already come into force — Trashchynski is serving his sentence in a penal colony.
