20 liters in the tank and no canisters? Is it true that Belarusian gas stations on the border with Russia have introduced fuel limits?

Information is circulating online that one of the Belarusian gas stations near the very border with Russia allegedly limited fuel sales: no more than 20 liters per car and no canisters. The reason cited is drivers going to Russia who refuel before the border, creating fuel problems for local residents.

"Nasha Niva" checked whether such restrictions have indeed appeared on the Belarusian border and whether it is now possible to fill a full tank before a trip to Russia.

What happened in Yezyaryshcha

The message about possible restrictions appeared on July 18. It was claimed that at a gas station in the urban settlement of Yezyaryshcha, Vitebsk region, located not far from the Belarusian-Russian border, cars were being refueled with no more than 20 liters.

According to drivers cited in the report, this regime was in effect at least on Thursday and Friday. Gas station employees allegedly explained that they had received instructions not to fill cars to a full tank and not to dispense fuel into canisters. The reason was high demand from those traveling to Russia: they refuel before the border and, it was claimed, effectively "deplete" local gas stations.

"Can I get a full tank?" - "Of course"

To find out what was happening at Belarusian gas stations, "Nasha Niva" called several gas stations near the border with Russia. We introduced ourselves as travelers returning from Belarus to Russia and worried that we wouldn't be able to fill a full tank before the border.

At the gas station in Yezyaryshcha, we were told that they had no limits.

— We have no restrictions, there's enough fuel, come and refuel.

— So we can fill a full tank and canisters?

— Yes, of course.

We received a similar picture during calls to other gas stations in the Vitebsk and Mogilev regions. They also assured us: there are no limits on the amount of fuel, a car can be filled to a full tank, and canisters can also be filled.

The question of border gas stations arises not for the first time

Similar rumors are appearing against the backdrop of a large-scale fuel crisis in Russia. One of its main causes has been regular Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refining infrastructure. In recent months, Ukrainian forces have carried out dozens of strikes on oil refineries, as a result of which some of the country's oil refining capacities have been put out of action. In a number of Russian regions in June and July, restrictions on gasoline sales were introduced. Depending on the region, drivers could be dispensed 15-30 liters at a time, and in some places, sales of fuel in canisters were separately restricted.

Against this background, Belarusian gas stations, especially those located near the border, have come under increased scrutiny. Already in June, there were reports that Russians were actively refueling in Belarus and taking fuel with them.

In early July, information also appeared about restrictions in the opposite direction. At the Kaskovo-Klyukino crossing on the Smolensk-Mstislav highway, Russian border guards, according to reports, did not allow a driver to take more than 10 liters of gasoline in an additional canister into Belarus. They explained their decision by a ban on exporting fuel from Russia abroad.

Meanwhile, Belarusian authorities and "Belarusneft" publicly assure that there is no fuel shortage in Belarus. As early as early July, a company representative stated that there was enough fuel at gas stations and warehouses, deliveries were made on time, and there were no limits, including at border gas stations.
