Ten European countries, including Ukraine, have announced the creation of a new coalition that will focus on developing ballistic missile defense systems. The initiative has already been joined by the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Ukraine, France, and Sweden, according to the Élysée Palace press service.
The joint declaration states that participants plan to combine the capabilities of their defense industry, scientific research, and practical experience to create a common missile defense system in Europe. It is emphasized that the coalition is exclusively defensive in nature and is not directed against any nations. Ukraine's experience gained during its defense against Russian aggression is specifically noted.
The main project of the new association will be the accelerated development of modern missile defense systems, which should complement the existing systems of European countries. In the first phase, participants are to agree on common requirements, create working groups, define mechanisms for managing the coalition, and prepare a plan for its further development. Joint financing of scientific research and more active information exchange are also planned. In the future, other states will be able to join the coalition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that strengthening missile defense is crucial for the country's security. In his opinion, the more means Ukraine receives to intercept Russian ballistic missiles, the fewer opportunities Russia will have to use missile strikes as a means of pressure, and the more chances there will be for a transition to negotiations.
The creation of the coalition was announced on the day of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Paris, where a meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing" is taking place.
