Belarus national basketball player got into a drunken fight in Russia with a couple who gave him a ride. Ended in a criminal case

Belarusian basketball player Andrei Stabrouski got into an unpleasant situation in Russia. It happened in 2023-2024, but it only became known now.
Andrei Stabrouski is a well-known Belarusian basketball player. He was born in Orsha in 1997. From 2014 to 2023, he was in the system of Minsk "Tsmoki" (renamed "Minsk" in 2022). In 2019-2022, Stabrouski also played for the Belarusian national team.
In January 2023, the Belarusian signed a contract with the "Rusichi" club from Kursk, Russia. But soon everything went downhill.
On February 4, 2023, at approximately 5:20 AM, the intoxicated athlete got into a conflict near a shopping center in Kursk. A husband and wife, strangers to Stabrouski, offered him a ride in their car.
On the way, Stabrouski and the male driver argued about where to stop the car. Most likely, it escalated to a physical altercation — because the woman tried to separate the participants of the conflict.
And then the Belarusian basketball player punched her in the face. The woman lost her balance, fell on her back, hit the back of her head on the asphalt, and sustained a closed traumatic brain injury (occipital bone fracture). The injury was considered severe, life-threatening harm to health.

It is unknown whether Stabrouski was held in a pre-trial detention center during the investigation, but he came to court from under house arrest. On December 13, 2023, the Leninsky District Court of Kursk found the basketball player guilty under Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm) and sentenced him to 2 years in a penal colony. At that point, the Belarusian was taken into custody.
The athlete and his defenders appealed the verdict — they insisted that the blow was instinctive and careless, and the severe head injury did not arise directly from the blow, but from the fall and impact with the asphalt.
And the Kursk Regional Court believed Stabrouski. At the appeal hearing, the judge agreed that there was no direct evidence of intent to inflict specifically grievous bodily harm in the case; the conflict arose not with the victim, but with her husband; the blow was singular and by itself caused only minor harm. As a result, the charge was reclassified to infliction of grievous bodily harm by negligence — Part 1 of Article 118 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
Given that Stabrouski had no previous convictions, the Belarusian basketball club "Minsk-2006" and the Republican Center for Olympic Training provided him with positive references, and he himself reconciled with the victim and paid her about $10,000 in compensation, the sentence was quite lenient — a fine of about $800.
Stabrouski was released in the courtroom. After his release, the athlete returned to Belarus, and in July 2024, he rejoined BC "Minsk," for which he currently plays.
