A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Indonesia on the morning of August 15. The epicenter was located near the island of Flores, in the province of East Nusa Tenggara, Reuters reports .
Initially, 20 fatalities were reported in the Maumere area on the northeastern part of Flores Island, with six people injured and two more potentially trapped under rubble. However, the number of victims later increased: according to the latest reports, at least 47 people have died.
The most difficult situation occurred in Nagekeo Regency, which is closest to the epicenter. Rescuers could not reach the area by car in time because roads were blocked by landslides, and communication was intermittent. Approximately 2,000 residents had previously been evacuated from this area.
The earthquake triggered numerous aftershocks, collapses, and significant destruction. According to operational data, homes, schools, medical facilities, and other public buildings were damaged or destroyed. Electricity was lost in some areas.
Despite a preliminary tsunami warning issued by authorities, the recorded waves were relatively small, after which the tsunami threat was canceled. Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities continue to assess the scale of destruction and the number of victims.
