To monitor arms supplies to Ukraine, Russia hacks civilian cameras in Europe

Dutch intelligence services AIVD and MIVD have stated that Russian hackers are conducting a large-scale campaign to hack civilian IP cameras in NATO countries and Ukraine. The goal of such attacks is to monitor routes for transporting military equipment and arms supplies to Ukraine, reports The Moscow Times.

According to the special services, cameras installed along logistical routes, including in the Netherlands itself, which is one of the main transit hubs for military aid supplies to Kyiv, were subjected to hacking. Organizations whose systems were under threat have already received warnings and taken measures to strengthen security.

Intelligence noted that attackers exploit vulnerabilities in internet-connected video surveillance cameras. Many devices still operate with default passwords, outdated software, and basic security settings. In addition, there are special online services that allow easily finding such cameras and checking them for vulnerabilities.

After gaining access to the cameras, it is possible to monitor the movement of equipment and cargo in real-time, which allows determining what weapons and in what volumes are entering Ukraine.

The Telegraph notes that the use of civilian cameras for reconnaissance has become one of the widespread tools in modern warfare. This method is significantly cheaper than using satellites or drones and allows obtaining information from ground level.

According to Dutch special services, similar methods were previously used by other parties to conflicts, but the current activities of Russian state structures differ in scale and systematic nature.
