“For parents, there is nothing more precious than children. Often, almost everything we do, we do with them in mind. So that they can grow, make mistakes, dream. So that they can achieve what we couldn't. I am a mother of two children. And I know the feeling when you look at children and think: may you have a better life.
May you have more opportunities. May you be happier than us. This is, probably, the most natural parental desire,” writes Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
In her opinion, it seems so simple, but the reality in Belarus is completely different now.
“Childhood increasingly means having to learn to be silent and obey, because the regime sees children not as individuals with their own character and dreams. It sees future 'correct' citizens.”
“But is this what we want for our children? I believe that every mother will agree with me — children have the right to grow differently. To learn to think critically and independently, to ask questions, to argue, to make their own, even if incorrect, choices.”
“It is often very difficult for Belarusian children.
My children were young when we left Belarus, but they know well that there is a dictatorship in our country and we cannot return home. There are those whose parents are in prison and cannot be with them. There are those who grow up far from home, and those who learned to be cautious too early: what can be said at school, and what is better to keep silent about. Behind all this is the life of a child who desperately needs the opportunity to simply be a child.”
“Protecting children is not just about safety. It is about the right to live at home, to be with parents and relatives. The right to freely ask uncomfortable questions, to argue, to make mistakes, and to dream. To grow up in a country where one can truly enjoy childhood and not be afraid. And this is precisely what we are fighting for — a better future for our children,” says Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
