"I would like to address one person in my own name. He doesn't use a VPN to watch this ceremony live. I'm sure he has much more important issues to resolve right now. And I know that there are people in his entourage who know how to convey these words to him.

Millions of people on both sides of the line of contact are now dreaming of only one thing — for the countless killings of people to finally stop. And the only person who can stop this meat grinder is you, Mr. President of the Russian Federation. End this massacre now. The whole world is waiting for it," said Zvyagintsev.

The hall met these words with applause.

For Zvyagintsev, this year's Grand Prix is his fourth award in Cannes. In 2011, his film "Elena" was awarded the jury prize in the "Un Certain Regard" competition program. In 2014, "Leviathan" received the award for best screenplay. The film "Loveless" won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.

As for the other laureates of this year's festival, the best directors were named Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi from Spain, who directed the film "Black Ball" based on Garcia Lorca's play. And also — Polish-British director Paweł Pawlikowski for the exquisite film "Homeland" about writer Thomas Mann's visit to post-war Germany.

The Jury Prize went to the film "A Dream's Adventure" by German director Valeska Grisebach.

The film "Suddenly" by Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi was awarded for "Best Actress." The acting tandem of Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto received the award.

The "Golden Palm for Career" was awarded to American actress Barbra Streisand, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to an injury but recorded a speech of gratitude.
