Fragment of an 18th-century Jewish parchment found in an attic in Navahrudak
Artist Viktar Vasiukevich from Navahrudak showcased an interesting find — a fragment of an 18th-century parchment with ancient Hebrew writings. The artifact was discovered in the attic of a relative's house. How the relic came into the painter's family is difficult to ascertain now, writes "Zvyazda".
According to family legend, Viktar's relatives fled the Navahrudak ghetto during the German occupation, changing their surname: his mother's real surname was Kats. The scroll they brought was hidden in the attic of a village house under straw, with parchment sheets covering the entire floor...
According to experts from the National Library, the monument was created approximately in the second half of the 18th century, as evidenced by the condition of the ink used in writing: it has a reddish hue.
The Torah, or Pentateuch of Moses, is a sacred book of the Jewish religion, given to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai. Its text was transmitted on parchment scrolls, made by specially trained scribes. They used only the skin of a kosher animal (lamb), and the scribe was not allowed to make a single correction, otherwise the scroll would be declared ritually "unclean".
