Kaja Kallas: EU plans to maintain isolation of Russia and Belarus in world sports
The European External Action Service, together with the European Commission, will prepare proposals on how to prevent the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions and maintain Russia's isolation in world sports. This was stated on October 12 after the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, writes «Ukrainska Pravda».
EU foreign ministers discussed the further isolation of Russia and Belarus in the sports sphere. According to Kallas, the discussion concerned preventing the return of athletes from the two countries to international competitions. A similar situation, she noted, is also observed in the cultural sphere.
Kallas emphasized that sport and culture should not be used to whitewash Russian aggression. Based on the discussion, her service, together with the European Commission, will prepare proposals aimed at maintaining Russia's isolation in world sports.
These measures can be implemented in parallel with the introduction of new sanctions against those who destroy Ukrainian cultural heritage, added the head of European diplomacy.
In July 2026, Kallas had already condemned the decision of the International Olympic Committee, which creates prerequisites for the return of Russian athletes to international competitions.
