Maldzis Initiative Returns Rare Interwar Photos from Kosava
The Maldzis Initiative acquired three historical photographs from the 1930s, connected to the birthplace of Tadeusz Kościuszko — Kosava and Merachowshchyna, at an auction in Poland.

The main find is a photograph of a plaque with a bas-relief portrait of Kościuszko. This commemorative plaque once adorned the house in Merachowshchyna where Tadeusz was born. The acquired photograph measures only 10x14 cm. It is dated 1936 and might be the only known image of the memorial plaque.
Two other photographs by Polesie documentary photographer Jozef Szymanczyk capture the neighboring Puslowski Palace, located in Kosava near Merachowshchyna. This is one of the most recognizable architectural monuments in Belarus. The first photo shows a fragment of the palace facade, while the second shows a general view of the building with its characteristic towers.

The condition of the palace in the photographs is particularly interesting. One of them shows shattered windows and partially ruined interiors. This allows us to see the monument not only as an architectural landmark but also as a witness to the dramatic events of the 20th century.

«In this case, the word "return" has a literal meaning. These photographs were taken in Belarus, preserved evidence of its temporary Polish past, and are now returning to their place of origin. Since the author of two of the photographs, Jozef Szymanczyk, was born and lived in Kosava, and their owner Czesław Gake worked there in the 1930s, we are also returning a part of the heritage of people whose fates were connected with Belarus," says the head of the Maldzis initiative.
All three photo rarities were acquired at an auction in Poland thanks to monthly donations from the initiative's supporters. The next fundraising efforts are open to everyone — you can support them via the form.
In the future, the photographs will be transferred to the Tadeusz Kościuszko Museum-Estate in Merachowshchyna.

- чыі яны юрыдычна ў гэты час;
- дзе і як захоўваюцца;
- ці існуе публічны доступ грамадскасці да іх на гэты перыяд;
