The fervent supporter of the union with Russia was 85 years old.
Sergei Kastian was born on January 15, 1941, in the village of Usohi, Klichaw district, Mogilev region, into a large peasant family. He graduated from a construction school in Chelyabinsk and worked as a carpenter at the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant. He then returned to Komsomol and party bodies in the Mozyr district, taught at the Mozyr State Pedagogical Institute, defended his candidate's dissertation, and became a doctor of political science and a professor.
He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the XIII convocation, a deputy of the House of Representatives. He was the chairman of the Belarusian Slavic Committee, the Slavic Parliamentary Union, a member of the International Slavic Committee, and a member of the Presidium of the European Peace Forum. He was the Secretary of the Communist Party of Belarus and even the first director of the editorial and publishing institution "Literature and Art" (2002).
He was a terrible anti-Belarusian, an ardent supporter of Lukashenka.
In his 2005 story "Carollers," Uladzimir Lobach depicted Deputy Kastian in the image of Deputy Katsyan:
"...last week, the Master himself, during another meeting, asked for a moment of silence to honor the memory of the mad Deputy Katsyan. The unfortunate man was caught by nationalists and forced to read the entire archive of their "Niva," starting from 1906. Clearly, the mind of the elderly deputy, which was not particularly firm to begin with, had hopelessly "slipped." Now, as people said, Katsyan could periodically be seen near the Ministry of Truth, where he would poke officials in the face with that same "Niva" and loudly demand: "So, subscribe!"
