Belarusians started to contact medics more often after contact with wild animals
In Minsk, in the summer of 2026, cases of people seeking medical help after contact with wild animals that can carry rabies became more frequent. This was reported by the Minsk City Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology.
In July and August, Minsk residents more often sought emergency rabies prophylaxis at polyclinics and hospitals after contact with hedgehogs, squirrels, and bats.
In the case of hedgehogs and squirrels, people often provoked contact themselves — trying to pick up wild animals or play with them. However, encounters with bats happened unexpectedly: they could fly into an apartment or a summer house through an open window at night.
Sanitary doctors remind that bats can carry the rabies virus. This is a dangerous infectious disease that affects the human central nervous system and, without timely prophylaxis, can lead to death.
The main danger arises from an animal bite or if its saliva gets on damaged skin or mucous membranes.
For prophylaxis, specialists advise installing mosquito nets on windows and not handling wild animals with bare hands. If it's necessary to touch an animal, thick gloves should be used.
If a bite does occur, the wound must be thoroughly rinsed with running water and soap as soon as possible, and then medical attention should be sought immediately. There, the necessity of a course of rabies vaccinations will be determined.
If a bat flies into a residential area, sanitary services do not recommend trying to catch it independently. It is better to contact specialists who deal with bat capture, or the relevant emergency services.
