The Russian frigate "Admiral Grigorovich" was involved in the incident. The yacht, which had no engine, had departed from Great Britain, but due to dense fog, lost its direction and drifted towards the Russian ship. The frigate's crew initially gave an audible signal, demanding the yacht change course and move to a safe distance. When the yacht failed to move away, the Russian ship fired warning shots.
According to British authorities, the shots were fired from approximately 500 yards (about 457 meters) from the yacht, which is considered a relatively short distance in maritime conditions. As a result of the incident, no one was injured, and the yacht sustained no damage.
The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles (about 37 kilometers) south of the Isle of Wight, outside of UK territorial waters. The British Ministry of Defence announced that it is investigating the circumstances of the incident.
This happened a few days after British Royal Marines stopped a tanker from Russia's "shadow fleet" in the English Channel, which was transporting sanctioned oil. However, British officials currently see no direct link between these two incidents and are treating the yacht shooting as a separate event.
Russian warships regularly pass through the English Channel and are usually monitored by Royal Navy vessels. According to available information, the British patrol vessel HMS Mersey was monitoring the "Admiral Grigorovich" at the time. It was also previously reported that the frigate was escorted and monitored by HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey during its movement near the French coast.
According to NATO data, the "Admiral Grigorovich" had recently been performing tasks escorting vessels of Russia's "shadow fleet" through the English Channel. For its prolonged stay at sea, it was supplied by the auxiliary repair and replenishment ship PM-82, which delivered water, food, and other necessary materials.
