«We have a tiny number of those who take free diplomas». An official from the Ministry of Health commented on the abolition of paid education in medical universities
«Want a state-funded place? Please, go for a state-funded place».

Alena Bohdan
In early spring, it became known that the admission procedure to medical universities in Belarus would change. The number of state-funded places increased, while paid places remained only for distance learning at BSMU.
Future doctors will not receive diplomas without mandatory work placement: those on state-funded places must work for two years, and those on targeted placements for five. Amid exam season, representatives of specialized universities and the Ministry of Health commented on the situation on STB TV channel, writes Onliner.by.
Asked how the news might affect the number of applicants, Alena Bohdan, First Deputy Minister of Health of Belarus, replied:
— We have a tiny number of those who currently take free diplomas, that's first. Second, we have increased the number of places by more than 700. Want a state-funded place? Please, go for a state-funded place. Want a targeted placement? Take a targeted placement. We will work this year, conduct our admissions campaign, and we will see. But in reality, the quality of teaching does not depend at all on whether you study for free or for a fee, on a state-funded place, or on a faculty where foreign specialists study.
Iryna Nazarenka, rector of Gomel State Medical University, also commented on this topic:
— The demand among applicants for medical specializations is growing every year. We see this through the open days we hold repeatedly. We see very high interest. Also, we have introduced medical classes, and the first graduates from these medical classes have already emerged. The interest is very high. In the example of Gomel Medical University, there was only one free diploma for the entire university out of almost 500 graduates. This also says a lot. For our fee-paying students, free students, state-funded students, and targeted placement students – 100% provision of the first job.
