Ukraine's National Team Enters World Hockey Elite for the First Time in 20 Years
The Ukrainian team secured a spot in the top 2 of the tournament in Division IA. On the decisive day of the competition, the Ukrainians defeated Japan 3:1, managing a comeback during the match.

After this victory, the fate of advancing to the elite depended on the game between Poland and Lithuania. Poland needed only a win in regular time to overtake Ukraine.
However, the match ended unexpectedly. Lithuania opened the scoring, and Poland only managed to equalize at the end of the second period. In the third period, the tournament hosts could not secure a victory, and the game went into overtime.
This meant that Poland lost its chance to advance to the elite, and the Ukrainian national team guaranteed its promotion. Moreover, in overtime, the Lithuanians scored the winning goal and won the match.
Thus, Ukraine returned to the strongest division of world hockey for the first time since 2007. The next World Championship will be the Ukrainian national team's first in the elite in two decades.
The second country whose national team is entering the world hockey elite this year is Kazakhstan. It returns there after a one-year break.
