Ivaniuk: Work on restoring Kamunikat.org website is underway

Yaroslav Ivaniuk, head of the 'Kamunikat' project, which combines a Belarusian online library and a publishing house, shared on his Facebook how the portal's restoration is progressing after a large-scale hacker attack.

«Dear friends, thank you all for your concern! We received a lot of support and offers, but also questions regarding hosting, backups, and other technical aspects. We inform you: work on restoring the Kamunikat.org website is underway. Backup copies exist, but due to a combination of technical circumstances that have accumulated over 25 years, the process is not as fast as we would like, and it's impossible to restore everything with a single click. 'Kamunikat' has been under attack for a long time, and we have successfully fended them off, but the current situation showed us what needs attention, and now our team is working on how to prevent similar incidents in the future," wrote Yaroslav Ivaniuk.

The Kamunikat.org website, which hosts the largest Belarusian online library, was attacked on the night of May 7.

«Initially, there were hopes that it wasn't an attack, but rather everything was due to overloaded traffic. However, eventually, around 4 AM, we realized that our servers were simply wiped. Of course, in such situations, not everything is lost, as copies are preserved, but it all takes time to sort out. Although the situation could be worse, because, as one of the providers said, a virus might have been launched that would prevent recovery. But we are working on it," recounted Yaroslav Ivaniuk yesterday.

According to him, the servers store more than 70,000 different Belarusian publications — books, newspapers, magazines, audiobooks, video, and audio materials about Belarus.

Last year, 'Kamunikat' turned 25 years old. Initially, it was exclusively an online library.

But since 2020, 'Kamunikat' began publishing books; over five and a half years, nearly 70 books have been published, and at the end of April this year, the Kamunikat.shop bookstore opened in Warsaw.
