How to protect yourself from midges? Does vanilla help?

With the arrival of spring warmth, certain regions of Belarus — especially the surroundings of the Bug, Sozh, and Dnieper rivers — face a real midge invasion. Warm weather and fast-flowing rivers create ideal conditions for the reproduction of these insects. We tell you how to protect yourself from them.

According to forecasts by specialists, a particularly large number of midges are expected in the second half of May and early June in the floodplains of the Bug, Polesie, and Dnieper regions. They are usually most active in the evening, after rain, and on warm, humid days. For many, this means spoiled walks, fishing, outdoor recreation, or work in the garden.

Midges, unlike mosquitoes, do not just pierce the skin. They bite out its upper layer and release saliva containing painkillers and anticoagulants (substances that prevent blood from clotting). This is why their bites are often more painful than mosquito bites and cause severe itching and swelling.

How to protect yourself from insects?

First of all, specialists advise using simple mechanical means of protection. When outdoors, it's best to wear light-colored and dense clothing with long sleeves, and tuck trousers into socks or closed shoes so that insects cannot reach the body. Repellents for skin and clothing also help, and at home and in tents — mosquito nets on windows and doors. In addition, it is worth avoiding walks near water and forests at dusk, when insects are most active.

For country plots and recreation areas, special fumigators or professional treatment of the territory can also be used.

Does vanillin really help?

Many Belarusians traditionally use folk remedies, the most famous of which is vanillin. It is believed that its strong smell repels midges in particular.

Important: Vanillin is almost ineffective against mosquitoes. Also, do not confuse regular vanillin with vanilla sugar: sugar, on the contrary, attracts insects.

The most popular preparation methods:

vanilla spray: a packet of vanillin is diluted in a glass of warm water, after which the solution is poured into a spray bottle. Some add cloves to enhance the effect. This product is sprayed on the skin and clothing;

vanilla cream: a packet of vanillin is mixed with 50 ml of baby cream or any other fatty body cream. The resulting mixture is applied to exposed areas of the skin. For a better effect, essential oils of lavender, juniper, or tea tree are sometimes added.

Note that there is no serious scientific evidence of the high effectiveness of vanillin. It can temporarily reduce the number of midge attacks, but in terms of strength and duration of action, it is significantly inferior to modern pharmacy repellents. In areas of high insect concentration, it is better to rely on professional products.

What to do after a bite?

If you are bitten by midges, the bite areas should be washed with clean water and soap. A cold compress can help with severe itching. You can also use gels or special "after-bite balms" if they are available in your home first-aid kit.

If a severe swelling, shortness of breath, or other signs of an allergic reaction appear after a bite, you should consult a doctor.
