Researchers are studying a new injectable drug, CBL-514, which acts directly on fat cells in the abdominal area. According to preliminary results of clinical trials, it is capable of reducing both subcutaneous and visceral fat — the kind located deep within the body around internal organs, reports the New York Post.

Unlike GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic, CBL-514 does not slow down digestion or reduce appetite. It blocks a vital survival mechanism of fat cells, causing them to die at the injection site — specifically, in the abdominal area.
In phase two trials, participants received a CBL-514 injection once every three weeks. The number of injections depended on the thickness of the fat layer on the abdomen and decreased as the drug took effect.
After four weeks, the average amount of visceral fat in the abdominal area decreased by 12%. Eight weeks after the start of treatment, its level was still 10.45% lower than the baseline.
The study authors suggest that after fat cells are destroyed, their ability to regenerate may be limited. However, a prolonged effect after stopping treatment has so far only been proven in experiments on rats. Whether the same result will occur in humans is still being studied.
Researchers are also investigating whether CBL-514 can be combined with GLP-1 drugs to reduce the risk of weight regain after their discontinuation.
According to the data presented, the most common side effects were pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site. These were generally mild or moderate and resolved quickly. No serious adverse reactions were recorded during the study.
CBL-514 is now moving into phase three clinical trials. This is the final stage of research before potentially receiving FDA approval for the drug's use.
