Mikalai Statkevich laid flowers at graves in Minsk Military Cemetery and explained why he does it there and on May 8

"Now history is repeating itself. Again they want to build their "peace," only not "Aryan" but "Russian," — writes the former political prisoner.

"Now history is repeating itself. A war has been started again with the aim of taking revenge for a lost war, only this time not the First World War, but the Third "Cold" World War. Again they are trying to regain lost territories, only not Danzig and Alsace, but Crimea and all of Ukraine, again they are "defending the rights of compatriots," only not in the Sudetenland, but in Donbas, again they want to build their peace, only not "Aryan" but "Russian," — writes Statkevich in his Telegram channel. — And they are trying to use in their war those who fought and died trying to stop all of the above.

The dead are not to blame if they are used in political games and information wars. They cannot rise from their graves to defend themselves. Just as pilot Akrestsin cannot rise from his grave in the Military Cemetery to object to his name being associated, in the eyes of the whole planet, with a place where people were tortured for their beliefs."

The politician recalled that at the end of June 2020, while serving an arrest in the Akrestsin Street detention center, he was заочно (in absentia) given another 15 days of arrest for "holding an unauthorized mass event" — laying flowers on May 8 of the same year at the graves of fallen soldiers in the Minsk Military Cemetery.

"I think it's hard to find a more eloquent testimony to the authorities' true attitude towards the memory of the millions of victims of that war unleashed by totalitarian regimes."
