Viking Ship Fragment Found in Netherlands During Sewer Construction
During sewer construction work southeast of Amsterdam, workers stumbled upon an unexpected find — a large piece of wood that may have come from a Viking ship. Due to this, the work had to be temporarily halted, the authorities of Wijk bij Duurstede reported.
According to available information, the discovered fragment is over three meters long and possibly dates back to the 9th century. If confirmed, this would be the first such archaeological find in this city.
Historically, this location is known as Dorestad — an important trading center in the 7th-9th centuries, connecting Scandinavian lands with Frankish territories. Therefore, the find could be related to both trade and Viking raids, which frequently occurred in this region.
To accurately determine the age of the wood, archaeologists still need to conduct additional research, including tree-ring analysis. There is, however, also a theory that it might not be a Viking ship, but a later vessel — for example, a trading "cog" from the 13th-14th centuries.
The discovered fragment has already been carefully removed and handed over to specialists for further study. In the future, it may be displayed in a local museum as an important historical relic.
