Meanwhile, detecting a camera is not easy: its lens diameter can be only 1-2 millimeters, and the body is usually hidden or camouflaged.
Careful inspection of the room
Pay attention to any suspicious objects that might hide a camera. They are often disguised as ordinary household devices, such as lamps, alarm clocks, smoke detectors, chargers, mirrors, etc.
Therefore, if you see something that looks unnatural, doesn't fit into the interior, or has strange holes, wires, or LEDs, it could be a sign of a hidden camera.
Try picking up such an item and see if it contains a lens, microphone, or memory card. Also check if it has a power source or battery, which are necessary for the camera to operate.
Smartphone flashlight and camera
According to experts, even well-hidden cameras will have a small amount of reflective glass from the lens. Therefore, one of the easiest ways to find a hidden camera is to turn on a flashlight (this can be a phone flashlight) in a dark room. The reflective glass will create glares.
Experts say that during searches, you can use your smartphone's camera to detect infrared light emitted by a hidden camera. To do this, in a dark room, point your phone's camera at suspicious objects. If you see red or purple light on your phone screen, it could be light from a camera.
To understand if your smartphone is suitable for detecting infrared light sources, you can experiment with any remote control.
More "technological" search methods
A separate Wi-Fi network can be used for real-time camera data streaming. By installing a special program to scan the Wi-Fi network, you can determine how many networks are in the room.
Experts recommend using apps like WiGLE to find devices broadcasting suspicious network names.
The Android app Glint Finder can help find glares from the lens of a hidden video camera.
Additionally, there are programs (for example, Hidden Camera Detector) that help detect areas of high-density electromagnetic radiation. While the smartphone is running, the application determines the density of electromagnetic fields and displays the approximate locations of other radiation sources on the screen. It remains to check these locations more carefully.
Hidden camera detector
However, the methods described do not guarantee that you will find all hidden cameras, as some of them may be connected to other networks or operate offline, recording information to an SD card. In this case, a hidden camera detector can help.
Such a device works on two principles: radio frequency (RF) scanning and lens detection.
RF detectors allow you to find cameras that actively transmit data via radio waves: they emit a signal or sound when near such a camera.
Lens detectors help find cameras that reflect light from their lenses. If this light falls into the detector's field, a blinking dot is visible on its display.
The cost of such detectors ranges from 10 to 100 dollars. But there are also significantly more expensive models. Experts advise being patient and careful when using such detectors, as sometimes they can show false results or miss some cameras.
What to do if you find a camera
After detecting a camera, immediately disconnect it from its power source. Try not to damage the camera, as its software may contain identifying information, such as login data and the Wi-Fi network it was connected to.
If this happened in a hotel, experts advise not to change the room, but to move to another hotel.
And remember, your safety largely depends on you. As they say, "trust, but verify."
