Pensioner from Gomel Believed Fraudsters, Sold Apartment, Took Out Loans, and Handed Over Money
In Gomel, a 60‑year‑old man became a victim of a multi‑stage scam, losing his home and money.
It all started in May with a mundane call, supposedly from a delivery service: the Gomel resident dictated a code from an SMS, after which he was intimidated by fake "law enforcement officers".
The man was convinced that his data had been stolen, and to save his property, he needed to urgently and secretly sell his apartment.
The pensioner quickly found buyers and sold the dwelling for $51,000.
From this money, the curators allowed him to keep only $200 for living expenses, and he handed the rest over to a female courier.
The fraudsters did not stop there and forced the man to purchase two expensive flagship smartphones in installments, which he also handed over to the criminals.
The total amount of losses exceeded $54,000.
The courier — a 26‑year‑old resident of Grodno — has already been apprehended: it turned out that she was tricked using a similar scheme and forced to work as a "secret collector," transporting money from defrauded Belarusians to Moscow.
