Iran Blames 'Uncontrolled Elements' for Attacks on Ships in Strait of Hormuz

Iranian representatives stated during non-public contacts with the US that recent attacks on civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz were organized by "uncontrolled elements" within the country's governing system. According to American officials, Tehran admitted that it had made a mistake and expressed readiness to continue negotiations, Reuters writes .

According to sources, there is currently an internal confrontation in Iran between supporters of a more pragmatic course and those who advocate for a hardline policy. Washington believes that the Iranian leadership must take full control of the situation itself.

The US also insists that Iran publicly confirm the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and guarantee that new attacks will not recur. American officials warned that otherwise, Tehran could face serious consequences.

At the same time, Washington notes that the latest negotiations between the parties are taking place in a more constructive atmosphere.

On July 7, Iran launched missile strikes on several commercial tankers in the area of the Strait of Hormuz. The next day, US President Donald Trump stated the cessation of the ceasefire regime, after which American servicemen resumed strikes on military targets in Iranian territory.
