US launches new wave of strikes on Iran after Trump's statements about ceasefire ending

American military personnel announced a new series of strikes on Iran shortly after US President Donald Trump declared that he considered the ceasefire agreement to have expired. The military escalation began ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara and was provoked by Iranian attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz, writes the BBC.

According to the US Central Command, the country's forces carried out additional strikes to weaken Iran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation. Trump, on Truth Social, called it retaliation for Iran's bombing of ships, warning that if it happened again, "it will be much worse."

The new wave of American strikes has already concluded. 90 targets along the Iranian coast were attacked, including air defense systems, missile and drone depots, naval facilities, and logistical infrastructure.

The Iranian agency IRNA confirmed explosions in several cities (Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, Konarak, Sirik, Lavan islands). Infrastructure facilities at Iranshahr airport were damaged, and a firefighter was killed. Explosions were also heard in Bushehr, where a nuclear power plant is located, however, according to Trump's statements, the station was not affected.

In turn, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced attacks on two American bases in Kuwait and two in Bahrain. Kuwait's Ministry of Defense reported repelling missile and drone attacks. Tehran promised to resume massive attacks on US bases in the near future.

The escalation effectively shattered hopes of transforming the June memorandum of understanding (which provided for 60-day talks) into a permanent peace agreement.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman accused the US of violating the document. CNN sources report that Trump is losing patience due to Tehran's dragging out of nuclear program negotiations and is dissatisfied that the Strait of Hormuz is still not fully open. On board Air Force One, Trump told reporters: "Every time they hit us, we hit them 20 times."

The chief Iranian negotiator, local parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, accused the US of violating the agreement and reinstating oil sanctions, stating that "the Strait of Hormuz will open only with agreements with Iran, not with American threats." At the same time, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called the US actions "absolutely necessary."

Amidst the conflict, global oil prices rose by more than $1 per barrel.
