Social media reported the death of Ivan Antanyuk, a folk theater actor, former activist of the Belarusian Language Society and the Belarusian Popular Front, and a member of the "Spadchyna" club. He was 96 years old.
Ivan Antanyuk was born on January 3, 1930, in the village of Cherni, Brest district, into a family of a peasant-farmer.
In 1953, he graduated from the Tambov Aviation Radio Engineering School. Afterward, he worked as a practical training instructor at this school and served in air defense forces. He was demobilized in 1977 with the rank of major.
After demobilization, he moved to Minsk and worked at a computer manufacturing plant. At the same time, he completed an acting studio and received the title "Artist of the Folk Theater". He worked in the Folk Theater "Na Doŭhim Brodzie" (based at the cultural palace of the tractor factory). He played over 30 roles and was a laureate of union, regional, and republican folk theater competitions.
From the late 1980s, he was an active participant in the Belarusian National Revival. He was a member of the Belarusian Popular Front, the Society of Belarusian School, and the Frantsysk Skaryna Belarusian Language Society, and the "Spadchyna" club. He served as the secretary of the Kastrychnitski branch of the TBM in Minsk. He was included in the Book of Honor "Your Diligent Workers, Belarus".
He participated in the revival of the Greek Catholic Church in Belarus, serving as the chairman of the church council of the Mother of Perpetual Help parish from its earliest days. For his contribution to spiritual revival, he received awards from church authorities and a valuable gift on behalf of Pope John Paul II.
A memorial service for Ivan Antanyuk will be held on Wednesday, July 1, at Snezny Alley, 7.
