The war in Ukraine has caught up with the First World War in duration; it began on February 24, 2022, and has already lasted 1567 days.
The First World War began on July 28, 1914 (the Russian Empire entered the war on August 1) and lasted until November 11, 1918, ending with the Armistice of Compiègne.
However, the scale of that war, which was called the Great War (the Great Patriotic War in the Russian Empire until 1917, and the Imperialist War in the USSR and by Maksim Haretski), was different.
It affected not only territory in Europe but also some territories in Africa and Asia, and 38 countries participated, including the USA, Britain, Canada, and Australia, on whose territories no hostilities took place. Around 18 and a half million people died or went missing then.
Yesterday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that the AFU had liberated almost 100 square kilometers more than they had lost.
The Second World War lasted exactly six years and two days.
