Kalesnikava: In 2020, I fought not against Lukashenka, but for people, freedom, and free elections

Maria Kalesnikava suggests that Europe should not fight against Lukashenka, but fight "for people, for their future".

The former political prisoner voiced this view at the GLOBSEC conference in Prague, noted "Euroradio".

"In 2020, I fought not against Lukashenka, I fought for people, for freedom, for free elections. And there's a very big difference in understanding the strategy, in understanding the whole situation. And now, when I talk about negotiations with the Belarusian authorities, the first and only reason is people, people who remain in prisons, people who are in danger for their political views, etc.," says the ex-political prisoner.

"I think it's very important not to fight against the dictator in the way it's being done now, because Lukashenka has been here since 1994, 30 years have passed, but nothing has happened to him with sanctions, without sanctions, but if we think about people, about the country, sooner or later the time will come and the regime will end.

Lukashenka will leave for natural or other reasons, but the country must be independent, Belarus should not be part of Russia, Belarusians must be ready for this, and of course, therefore, the EU should pay a little more attention to a different perspective, a different strategy, not to fight Lukashenka, but to fight for people, for their future," noted Maria Kalesnikava.
