Woman killed cohabitant and gave birth to a girl. Paternal grandmother obtained custody
In Brest, thanks to the intervention of supervisory bodies, a woman will be able to obtain custody of her little granddaughter.
In November 2025, a resident of Brest was sentenced to seven years in a penal colony for the murder of her cohabitant. In the colony, she gave birth to a daughter.
"The entry of information about the father in the child's birth certificate was made based on the application of the mother, who was not married, in accordance with Art. 55 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Marriage and Family," — the General Prosecutor's Office reports.
The girl, who found herself in the status "without parental care," was taken to an orphanage in Pinsk. To take custody of her, the paternal grandmother had to appeal to the court to prove paternity. However, the court did not even consider her application: legally, the woman was considered a stranger to the child, because her son was not married to the girl's mother.
The Prosecutor's Office of Brest helped the woman officially confirm the paternity of her deceased son. Now, the Brest resident has gained the legal right to see her granddaughter and, most importantly, to claim custody over her.
