According to Marta Kos, this money should help Ukraine defend not only itself, but also Europe along with its values. The exact size of the first tranche has not yet been named.
The loan program is designed until the end of 2027. The EU notes that the funds can go not only to military needs, but also to support the normal functioning of the Ukrainian state and the fulfillment of social obligations.
In April, EU countries approved a €90 billion aid package for Ukraine, which should cover a significant portion of Kyiv's needs for the next two years. At the same time, the European Union adopted its 20th package of sanctions against Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that the first payments could begin as early as May or June. According to him, this will help strengthen the Ukrainian army and support the country's economy.
Part of the funding is planned to be provided from the revenues of frozen Russian assets, which are under sanctions.
