Rubio on Russian warnings: We will decide ourselves if it is safe for our diplomats to be in Kyiv

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, commenting on Russia's call for foreign diplomats to leave Kyiv, stated that the U.S. assesses the security of its diplomatic mission in the Ukrainian capital independently. Currently, the American embassy in Kyiv continues to operate, reports 'European Pravda'.

Rubio noted that Russia has been warning foreign diplomats for several months about the need to leave Kyiv. According to him, it is not a surprise for the U.S. that the Ukrainian capital is being subjected to attacks.

“Listen, we have an embassy there, and we will decide ourselves whether it is safe for them to be there or not... They have been warning diplomats to leave for several months, and I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that Kyiv is being subjected to attacks. I think this is well understood by everyone,” Rubio said.

The U.S. Secretary of State emphasized that the American State Department daily analyzes the security situation of every U.S. diplomatic mission worldwide. If a threat arises that, in the opinion of the American side, requires a change in status, the U.S. takes appropriate measures. However, in the case of the embassy in Kyiv, such a decision has not yet been made.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on foreign citizens, including diplomatic mission staff, to leave Kyiv and threatened new massive strikes on the Ukrainian capital.

The European Union Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarína Mathernová, stated that all EU member state embassies continue to operate in Kyiv, despite Russian threats. A similar position was expressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland.

Earlier, the European Commission also reacted to the Russian threats. They stated that the European Union will continue to support Ukraine and further increase pressure on Russia.
