Well-known mushroom picker Alexander Harbatsevich found a very rare mushroom — Gomphus clavatus, also known as clavate chanterelle or 'pig's ear'. According to the mushroom picker, he had dreamed of finding such a specimen for several years, and finally succeeded, reports Tochka.by.
The found mushroom was young, fresh, and almost undamaged. It had a characteristic lilac-purple hue and an unusual shape, which led Alexander Harbatsevich to compare it to a small piglet.
The clavate chanterelle is considered one of the rarest mushroom species in Europe. Even for experienced 'quiet hunt' enthusiasts, encountering it is a great stroke of luck. It is especially rare to find a young and well-preserved specimen, as such mushrooms are quickly damaged by insects and other forest animals.
Harbatsevich handed over a part of the found mushroom 'bush' to the Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The specimen will augment the institution's herbarium, as this species was not previously present in its scientific collection.
Gomphus clavatus received the name 'pig's ear' due to its unusual shape. Several caps grow from a single common base and often fuse together, resembling the folds of an ear.
This mushroom is considered edible and is found in Europe, North and Central America, as well as in the northern regions of Asia. However, in many European countries, it has become very rare due to the reduction of old forest areas. In some states, the species is included in lists of endangered mushrooms.
