New species of marine mollusks named after Cape Verde national team goalkeeper
Spanish researcher Jesús Ortea, while working on the scientific study "History of Biodiversity," discovered a new species of small red sea slug. The new species was named after a football player — the sea slug Vazinha, The Athletic reports.

The mollusk was found during research in the Caribbean Sea near Havana, Cuba, and the island of Guadeloupe. According to the scientist, by giving it this name, he wanted to express gratitude to the people of Cape Verde. In 2023, this country awarded him the "Medal for Merits in Ecology."
This is not the first time Jesús Ortea has named species he discovered after footballers. In 2019, he named a new species of small sea slugs after former Real Madrid and Costa Rica national team goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
The Cape Verde national team recently participated in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. The team reached the round of 16, where they lost to the Argentina national team 2:3 in extra time. A significant role in this undeniable achievement for the small island nation off the Atlantic coast of Africa was played by its veteran goalkeeper, whose name became known worldwide.
