Pressure on the British Prime Minister intensified after the victory of his intra-party opponent Andy Burnham in the Makerfield by-election. Burnham's return to parliament gives him the opportunity to officially contend for the leadership of the Labour Party.
According to Reuters, more than 100 Labour MPs publicly called on Starmer to resign or name a date for his resignation. He himself stated that he intended to fight for his position and urged party members not to weaken the party with internal conflicts.
Starmer discussed his political future with his wife at the Chequers country residence.
Andy Burnham, following his victory, promised to offer the country "a new path." His supporters are counting on a swift transfer of power without a prolonged struggle for party leadership.
