According to Trump, today the U.S. possesses the world's largest nuclear arsenal, Russia is in second place, and China is rapidly increasing its capabilities and could reach a comparable level in a few years.
Trump stated that he would like to see a large-scale agreement on denuclearization and a significant reduction in nuclear weapons stockpiles. He noted that modern arsenals are so vast that countries have the ability to repeatedly destroy human civilization, which he called a dangerous and unnecessary situation.
The American president also noted that one of the two states — Russia or China — shows significantly more interest in such an agreement than the other, but he did not specify which country he meant.
In addition to nuclear disarmament issues, Trump also touched upon the topic of sanctions against Russia. He reported that the American administration is considering the possibility of reinstating restrictions on Russian oil. According to him, U.S. authorities are currently monitoring the situation in the energy market and the fall in global oil prices.
Earlier, Washington temporarily softened the sanctions regime regarding certain operations involving Russian oil and oil products. These exceptions were introduced after the escalation of the situation around Iran and shipping problems in the Strait of Hormuz. The corresponding license expired on June 17, and at the time of Trump's speech, there was no information about its new extension.
