Large Poppy Field Destroyed in Svislach District

In Svislach district, police officers destroyed a large field of wild poppies that grew on a private plot in Patsui village. The area of the field was about one hectare, and the total mass of the destroyed plants exceeded 3.3 tons.

The owner of the land plot is a 54-year-old local resident. According to her, she was sowing wheat in the field, so the appearance of such a large quantity of poppies was a surprise to her.

How wild poppy seeds could have ended up in this field is not reported. However, the result was a bright red carpet of flowers, which looked very beautiful but was deemed dangerous because poppies can be used as raw material for producing narcotic substances.

The destruction of the plants was carried out as part of a special preventive operation "Mak" (Poppy), which takes place annually in Belarus. It began on June 1st and will continue until September 15th. The main goal of this campaign is to identify and eliminate wild or illegally grown narcotic-containing plants, primarily poppies and cannabis.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reminds that owners of land plots are obliged to monitor their territory and promptly destroy such plants. The absence of intent to cultivate poppies or cannabis does not always exempt from responsibility, as the law requires preventing their growth on one's land.

For illegal sowing or cultivation of poppies and cannabis without the aim of obtaining or distributing narcotic substances, administrative responsibility may apply — a fine of up to 20 basic units. If it is proven that the plants were deliberately cultivated with the aim of producing or selling drugs, criminal liability may ensue, including punishment in the form of imprisonment.
