A Crafty Gomel Resident Pulled an IOU Stunt to Avoid Paying Debts
He first borrowed money from an acquaintance in November 2020.
To confirm the seriousness of his intention to return the entire sum within the agreed term, he drew up an IOU. Subsequently, he repeatedly sought financial assistance from the same acquaintance. The amount of each new "tranche" was added to the IOU. In total, the debt grew to 70 thousand rubles.
When it was time to pay the bills, the borrower divided the IOU in half, hoping to thus destroy the only document confirming his debt obligations. But his plan failed.
The police seized two fragments of the IOU. A traceological examination of the whole from its parts was ordered.
According to the expert's conclusion, the traces of division on the IOU are cuts and were formed as a result of the action of scissors.
During a comparative study of the IOU fragments using methods of juxtaposition, incomplete and complete alignment along the lines of division, a match was established between the lower end of IOU fragment No. 1 and the upper end of IOU fragment No. 2, both in general and specific characteristics. As a result of the conducted study, experts reassembled the document fragments into a single whole and restored the IOU, which was considered altered.
