Lithuanian Defense Minister on Zelenskyy's Letter: Naive to expect Putin to simply retreat

After Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin, Lithuanian National Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated his desire for a just peace. However, the minister noted that it is naive to expect Putin to simply retreat, writes Delfi.lt.

"Perhaps, all of us hope and want that in the end, a just peace will prevail. A just peace means the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the occupied territories of Ukraine, including Crimea. And every step that shows the Russians that this is a war they started, and that all consequences, all the suffering, the deaths of Ukrainians – are exclusively their fault, I think, deserves approval," Kaunas told reporters at the Rudninkai training ground on Friday.

Reflecting on whether Zelenskyy's letter will achieve the desired effect, the Minister of National Defense noted that it is probably naive to expect Putin to simply retreat.

According to him, the international community should focus even more on supporting Ukraine and provide it with more resolute assistance through arms supplies to strengthen the advantage of the country defending itself against Russia.

On Thursday, in an open letter, Zelenskyy offered Putin to meet in person and declared readiness for a "full truce." This letter is one of the few instances where Zelenskyy has addressed Putin directly since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
