Tusk: Among those released today is a Belarusian who collaborated with Polish special services

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated at a press conference on April 28 that among those released today as part of an exchange between Belarus and Poland, in addition to Andrzej Poczobut and Grzegorz Gawel , is a Belarusian citizen who collaborated with Polish special services.

"Among those released today are Andrzej Poczobut, a writer, journalist, and fighter for Belarusian freedom. In addition to him, Father Gawel was released, as well as a Belarusian who collaborated with Polish special services," Tusk stated.

He did not, however, name the released person, citing their request. But it is known that at the end of 2024, Belarusian serviceman Dzmitry Pazniakou was sentenced to 19 years in prison on charges of espionage for Poland and revealing state secrets. He was tried together with Polish citizen Tomasz Bieroza, who received 14 years. It is possible that this case refers precisely to Pazniakou.

According to Tusk, the process of Poczobut's release was very complex:

"We made many attempts to convince the Belarusian regime to release him. It was very difficult to count on good faith from Minsk. During one of the last attempts at a prisoner exchange, the Belarusian side changed its decision and refused," Tusk stated.

Ultimately, the release of Poczobut and others became possible because Poland was able to offer Belarus and Russia people detained on charges of sabotage for exchange.
