Starting from 2024, companies and entrepreneurs who produce or import plastic flowers into Belarus are obliged to pay for their future disposal (180 rubles per ton). These funds are used to organize the collection and safe processing of this waste.

"Artificial flowers decompose over a long period, have a negative impact on the environment, pollute soil and groundwater. With the aim of minimizing waste generation, for which there is no possibility of utilization and neutralization in the country, the waste management strategy for production and consumption provides for the introduction of restrictions on the production and supply of goods that ultimately lead to the formation of this type of waste," representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection told a BelTA correspondent.

In addition, the Ministry of Natural Resources is working on preparing an Environmental Code. One of its goals is to ban the production of certain goods whose waste is difficult or impossible to recycle.

Officials plan to include artificial plastic flowers in this list.

So, what can replace artificial flowers at cemeteries? Live potted flowers, perennial plants in the ground, dwarf shrubs, lawn grass, or evergreen coniferous trees.
