Trump Extended Sanctions Against Belarus Leadership for Another Year
Donald Trump extended sanctions against the leadership of Belarus for another year, which are set to expire on June 16. This is stated in a document on the US Federal Register website.

«The actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Belarus and other persons continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,» the document states.
The corresponding decree will be officially published on May 26.
This refers to the extension of the decree issued back in 2006, that is, 20 years ago, by US President George W. Bush. This document provides for sanctions against individuals who, according to the US, «undermine democratic processes and institutions» in Belarus — Alexander Lukashenka himself, his eldest son Viktor, and other high-ranking officials and security forces. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed an additional decree clarifying the criteria for imposing sanctions.
These sanctions have been extended despite the fact that, overall, an opposite process is currently underway between Belarus and the US, and there are even talks of a «grand bargain» between Donald Trump and Alexander Lukashenka. For example, over the past year, the US lifted sanctions from Belavia, Belaruskali, Belarusian Potash Company, Belinvestbank, Development Bank, and the Ministry of Finance of Belarus. Lukashenka joined the Peace Council created by Donald Trump and even received an invitation to visit the US. In return, Lukashenka occasionally releases batches of political prisoners.
