Alexander Milinkevich needs emergency help

"Dear friends. We are asking for your support for Alexander Milinkevich," wrote Inna Kuley on Facebook.

Five months ago, on November 24, Alexander, by his own decision, went to the hospital for a planned operation. The reason was a tomography scan which showed that his right carotid artery was 80 percent blocked by a thrombus. Doctors strongly advised against delaying the operation, as the thrombus could detach at any moment, leading to fatal consequences. Alexander made this difficult decision, trusting the specialists.

The operation was performed on November 25. But its consequences were not what we all hoped for. Alexander suffered brain swelling. For three weeks, Alexander was in intensive care—between life and death. With God's help and thanks to your prayers, he survived.

Then began long months of battling infections, which, unfortunately, hospitals are full of and which are especially dangerous for people with weakened immune systems. Pneumonia, intestinal infection, then pneumonia again... Not everyone would have been able to withstand such an onslaught, but Alexander persevered. There were months of treatment: first in the neurology department, then in rehabilitation, and later in a specialized medical rehabilitation center.

The left part of the brain, which is responsible for intellect, speech, and memory, was not affected.

The right side—the one responsible for movement—sustained damage: his left arm does not work, and his legs are difficult to control. For a person as active, mobile, and full of energy as Alexander has always been, realizing that he is now bedridden is a very difficult ordeal. But my husband is a man of incredibly strong spirit. And this spirit is supported by each of you: those who send words of support, motivational videos, ask about his health, congratulate him on holidays, or simply remember us. From the bottom of my heart, I thank and bow low to everyone who cares about Alexander's fate, who supports us with words, prayers, help, and action.

Unfortunately, Alexander remains a carrier of pathogenic bacteria that can activate at any moment. Therefore, he cannot return home yet—he needs constant medical supervision and intensive rehabilitation. All this costs money. Like many of you, we cannot return to our homeland. Our home in Bershty is sealed after searches, and a criminal case has been initiated. We receive neither Belarusian nor Polish pensions and live only on what we can earn ourselves. When we were healthy and both working, we had enough for a decent life. Now everything has changed.

Rent, payment for the rehabilitation center, medications, transportation costs to get to my husband at the hospital daily—all of this is already beyond our means. Therefore, I appeal to you, friends, with a request for help. I strongly believe in the power of our solidarity, in the power of 'talaka' (communal effort), in human kindness.

I believe that if God preserved Alexander's life, then we must continue to fight for him.

And I truly believe that the celebration is still ahead," she wrote.
