USA Threatened Europe with Devastating Retaliatory Measures in Case of Starlink Restrictions During Frequency Allocation
Plans by European officials and parliamentarians to prioritize Old World companies in the allocation of frequencies for satellite communications have met with resistance from Washington.

US Ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, threatened devastating retaliatory measures against European companies if Brussels limits access for American competitors to its market, primarily Elon Musk's SpaceX. Given the scale of the American market, the consequences for European operators would be very painful, he warned in a conversation with the Financial Times, writes Moscow Times.
The EU is trying to reduce its dependence on American technologies due to concerns about the unpredictable actions of Donald Trump and the risks associated with the dominance of foreign companies in critical infrastructure.
However, the proposed changes in radio frequency spectrum allocation have drawn sharp criticism from SpaceX. The company warned that this move could lead to a deterioration in communication quality in Ukraine, where the Starlink service plays a key role in providing connectivity to both the civilian population and the armed forces.
The European Commission proposed reserving a portion of the frequency band, which allows smartphones to connect directly to satellites, for European companies. This would limit access to frequencies for Chinese and American companies. In turn, the European Parliament made proposals aimed at increasing barriers for non-European companies to access strategic radio frequencies.
The 2 GHz frequency band will be allocated in 2027.
As part of the European Commission's initiative, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, and Telefónica will join forces to secure access to these frequencies.
