Putin promised the West a mirror response in case of seizure of Russian vessels
Russia will respond in a mirror fashion if Western countries seize Russian merchant vessels, President Vladimir Putin stated during a meeting with the command of the Pacific Fleet (PF) in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, writes BBC.
According to him, the authorities of some countries, in violation of international law, are trying to restrict the movement of Russian vessels, and "recently came up with the possibility of seizing our vessels and selling our plundered property." He called this piracy and banditry.
"If this begins to be implemented in practice, we will be forced to respond in a mirror fashion. And not necessarily in those waters where raids on our warships and vessels are planned. But where we ourselves deem it necessary and expedient. Anywhere," Putin said.
Commander of the Pacific Fleet forces, Admiral Viktor Liina, in turn, reported to the president that Western countries are actively using vessels under third-country flags to transport their goods.
"Essentially, this is their shadow fleet. We have the forces to inspect and detain vessels of unfriendly states, their shadow fleet. Interagency cooperation has been organized. We are ready to proceed with these tasks," Liina emphasized.
