Adviser to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's Office, Leanid Marozau, noted that reports have appeared in the information space, which may create a false impression that the US Supreme Court's decision concerns all foreigners enjoying temporary protection, including Belarusians. According to him, this is not true.
He explained that the court's decision specifically concerns the TPS program — a mechanism of temporary humanitarian protection, which is granted only to citizens of countries included in the relevant list by the US Department of Homeland Security. Belarus has never been on this list, and the current decision concerns citizens of Haiti and Syria.
Marozau also emphasized that TPS is neither refugee status nor political asylum. It is a separate temporary protection mechanism that can be extended or revoked by decision of the US authorities depending on the circumstances.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's Office noted that, although there is indeed a trend in the US towards tightening migration policy, there are currently no grounds to claim that these changes will automatically affect Belarusians or lead to a review of their legal status.
"As of today, the decision does not contain conclusions that directly affect citizens of Belarus. We continue to closely monitor the development of American legal practice, and if decisions emerge that could directly affect Belarusians, we will certainly inform about it separately," said Leanid Marozau.
